Where do you go to get directions?

Have you ever asked yourself why there is no school to go to learn how to make marriage a success? What about the school that teaches you how to parent each of your individual children properly? Well, I have asked myself both of those questions! The answer to those questions came to me at around age 40 after having two of my own children, three step children, and two failed marriages. Those schools are available in the form of hiring a professional life coach who is trained to not only listen, but provide personalized teaching, frameworks, and to design environments that inspire concerted action to gain the desired results. That idea is along the same line as "Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a life time." Can you imagine getting the directions you need from yourself when in a time of crisis? None of us should expect ourselves to be experts without experience, tools, or teachers to guide us through our lives. In chapter 15, verse 22 of the new testament it says "Where there is no counsel, plans fail; but in a multitude of counselors they (plans) are established." Although spiritual, I have never been very religious, whatever that means, but that verse makes a lot of sense to me. Knowing where to get directions is the first step, those directions helping to create a plan is the next, and carrying out that plan to see the fruit, profit, or gain is the result.

Greetings!

I've got four questions for you this month!

  1. What are you working on with respect to your family issues?
  2. What will this bring you?
  3. How are you doing, or how is it working for you?
  4. Where would you like to be at the end of 12 months?

Sandy's August Tips

We all have thoughts and ideas that we believe are true called automatic thoughts. I suggest using the following four questions addressing those internal thoughts to test them for validity:

  1. Is this thought really true?
  2. Does holding on to this thought or attitude serve my best interests?
  3. Are my thoughts and attitudes advancing and protecting my health and the health of my family?
  4. Does this attitude or belief get me more of what I want, need and deserve in regards to my family life?
If any of those automatic thoughts which you have challenged came up with a negative answer, you need to figure out something different to replace the old thought. You can not have new or improved outcomes when you have not changed your method of operation or your way of thinking.

For Instance:

Years ago, when I quit smoking three packs of cigarettes a day, "self talk" was one of the first things that I had to modify. The old "That was such a close call, I really need a cigarette!" was replaced with "I don't really want a cigarette." The more often I said OUT LOUD the words that voiced my new intention to quit the nicotine habit, the easier it became to actually carry out my new day without smoking.
